Laboratory Capabilities
The optical laboratory is the manufacturing subsidiary of Class Optical Group and represents the company’s core competence, reflecting an organic growth in this wholly owned production process.
Since inception, the company has been engaged in manufacturing, beginning with the production of contact lenses and later optical frames, before investing in what is today a fully-fledged ISO 13485–certified ‘Free Form’ lens laboratory. This certification underscores our commitment to internationally recognised standards of quality, safety, and reliability.
Ongoing investment in technology and equipment ensures the lab remains at the forefront of innovation, combining all key production processes — surfacing, polishing, tints, coating, edging, and mounting. Each optical job is tailored to precisely match prescription requirements, with ISO 13485 guiding rigorous quality control to ensure products meet the highest standards and are dispatched swiftly to retailers.
The laboratory also serves larger overseas firms, supplying specific production orders as part of a wider Pan-European lab network. ISO 13485 certification further strengthens our position as a trusted partner for international collaborations.
Export market expansion is a key growth driver, with EU and North Africa identified as priority regions due to the country’s strategic geographic proximity.
Lens Surfacing
Established in 1992, our Lab has grown from a manual operation to automation and now specializes in the production and distribution of finished ophthalmic lenses.
Tints & Coats
Our tints and coats section can customise lenses from the traditional colours such as brown, grey or green to more sophisticated shades and gradations.
Lens Edging
The edging section is fully automated with various edging machines including a fast and reliable dry CNC edger. All data is received through our LMS.
Malta’s only freeform Optical Lens Laboratory
Our state-of-the-art optical lens laboratory adheres to ISO 13485 standards, ensuring high quality and precision in lens manufacturing.
- Class Optical serves all optical shops across Malta and Gozo (approx. 60 shops) as well as clients in North Africa through its own subsidiary.
- We serve as a trusted outsourcing partner to Europe’s leading lens manufacturers as well as customers across Europe that purchase lenses through our online portal.
- The laboratory dispenses over 120,000 lenses per annum, of which approximately 52,000 lenses are free-form surfaced lenses.
- Distributors of various leading optical lens brands including ZEISS, Ray Ban, Maui Jim, Oakley and most recently Essilor lenses.
